Primo Contatto: winter update 2021

Introducing a list of powers in adventure mode and new tactical maneuvers to enrich combat.

Here the computers do not show signs of restarting, but we managed to accumulate enough hyperium to publish this article.  Don’t worry, everything is great even without the internet 24/7, but we could not fail to deliver this important review of Primo Contatto, prepared and packaged thanks to the valuable contribution of our playtesters.

Author's notes: with this update we want to extend the use of gifts and expand the variety of action in different game modes. First of all, we have applied a profound revision to the powers: now we are giving even more room for adventurous actions, suitable for a large number of situations. Secondly, we introduce tactical maneuvers: specialized actions that give decisive advantages to the most cunning characters in combat.

Update notes v0.7

  • Action economy
    • Introducing new category of actions: tactical maneuvers. 
      • Added new maneuver "prepare": immediately grants a bonus of +1 to attack or intensity checks. Can stack up to 2 times.
      • Added new maneuver "release": doubles the bonuses provided by the action "prepare", then starts from scratch. It requires 2 preparations.
      • Added new maneuver "parry": reduces by 1 life point the damage suffered by a single opponent. You can parry several times in the same round, but each time you need to choose different opponents.
      • Added new maneuver "dodge": it immediately grants a bonus of +1 to the defense and +1 to any defece checks. Can stack up to 3 times.
      • Renamed maneuver from "tactical shot" to "strike a blow". Its effect remains unchanged.
    • Updated uses of gift in free mode:
      • The "adventure effects" are now usable in any game mode, but after the first use it must be recharged.
    • Updated use of gifts in turn-based mode: 
      • The "adventure effects" are now usable in any game mode, but after the first use it must be recharged.
  • Powers
    • Renamed "turn-based mode effect" to "primary effect"
    • Renamed "free mode effect" to "adventure effect"
    • Introduced new gift mechanic: each power describes how to recharge its adventure effect
    • Invocation
      • Redesigned the adventure effect: now in addition to lifting objects you can launch or move them. The effect also works on alive targets.
    • Remedy
      • Added constraint in the primary effect: "this power cannot be used in 2 consecutive turns."
      • Redesigned the adventure effect: now in addition to restoring life points the power sanitizes or cleans an area by accommodating the tastes of the character and the gift area of effect.
    • Cure
      • Redesigned the adventure effect: now in addition to restoring life points the power improves the quality of food and supplies and it gives advantage at the next ability checks.
    • Martyrdom
      • Redesigned the primary effect: now it "restores or subtracts 1 life point + 1 additional life point per flow, but the character is inhibited (i.e. cannot cast any gift) for one turn".
    • Fortress
      • Redesigned the adventure effect: now it creates a wall composed of the substance of the channeled flows.
    • Repulsion
      • Redesigned the primary effect: modified number of targets threatened by 2 life points per flow to 1 target per flow.
    • Slumber
      • Redesigned the adventure effect: now in addition to sleeping targets, banishes creatures from other worlds up to 2 life points per flow.
    • Camouflage
      • Redesigned the adventure effect: now in addition to camouflage targets allows to deduce detailed information on tracks, directions or paths.
    • Psychoficity, Agility and Substance:
      • Redesigned the primary effect: now the power no longer activates advantage, but allows you to distribute 1 bonus point per channeled flow to a characteristic of choice. 
    • Protection
      • Redesigned the primary effect: now the power protects 1 target per channeled flow from a single threat that deals with the following conditions: destabilized, immobilized, incapacitated, slowed down or rejected.
    • Summoning
      • Redesigned the adventure effect: now it makes the summoning permanent. The creature retains its powers and remains faithful as long as it maintains a firm relationship with its summoner.
    • Reformulate several other descriptions to improve clarity.

Footnote: nomenclature of update notes

We are formalizing the way we refer to game reviews: in addition to reporting the publication season, e.g. winter 2021, we will reserve to the first digit of the version the major releases, to the second the revisions (like this) and to the eventual third the refinements. Example:

winter update 2021 = v0.7 = release 0 (playtest), major revision 7
