Adventure preview: Attack on Serenity

In this article we summarize the key aspects of the story and here are some suggestions to better address the creation of the characters.

At the time of the publication of this article Attack on Serenity is in the playtest phase, below you will find a preview of the systems and content that we are preparing for you.

Attack on Serenity is a short campaign of Primo Contatto RPG: a playable content both in a single session, both in a longer adventure that goes from 3 to 6 sessions

Year 2020: a huge celestial crystal fell in South America, decimating the population and disabling any radio interface: it is Primo Contatto, the creation of the first magic bubble. In these lands now devoid of technology the Protectors have invaded Serenity, a rare oasis of civilization and home for your community. Will you risk saving her for the Guardian's favor, or will you run for your life?


The characters find themselves in the midst of an invasion. Serenity has been their base for some time and now they will have to decide whether to defend the inhabitants or find the quickest way to a tactical escape. In this adventure they can consolidate their position among the Survivors, learn different tactical details in the fight against the Protectors and reveal important secrets about the function of the Guardians.

4 truths of Attack on Serenity

The facts we report in this section are known and can be revealed to players before starting the adventure.

  1. The New United Nations (NNU) has released in South America the Celestials: special agents able to increase their physical and cognitive functions thanks to technological devices called MTM.
  2. The Celestials have no fixed bases, but have integrated into local native communities. Their goal is to find a way to bring technology back to normal.
  3. A local band called "Protectors" has been scouring the territory for months, using magic to forcibly enlist members of other communities.
  4. The Protectors have tried multiple times to capture an individual known as "The Prophet" without ever succeeding. Recently their strategy has changed and the gang decided to attack directly Serenity, the Survivors' base camp.

Forces at play

In the recent future of Primo Contatto the concept of nationality has now been overcome. At this time, the most influential organisations were:

New United Nations (NNU). International organization born in response to Primo Contatto. In its ranks soldiers, scientists and engineers, but also individuals who have developed affinities with supernatural powers. NNU is the best equipped organization thanks to generous grants from the richest pockets on the planet.

Survivors. These small communities experienced first-hand Primo Contatto and came out alive. Survivors welcome rescuers and volunteers to help rebuild civilization. Among them, mystical characters are making their way, whose gifts transcend science and reality.

Protectors. It is the dominant community within the bubble in South America. The Protectors integrate those who accept their expansionist aim and subjugate all others. They are convinced that Primo Contatto is the key to unlimited power and they have every intention of obtaining exclusive power.

Game variant: the chaos gifts

When the characters are in Serenity they can take advantage of the influence of the local Guardian to invoke chaotic qualities, that is, qualities without a specific power, but with a final effect guided only by the will of the character. To invoke a chaotic dowry a character must invest at least 1 stream from his reserve and declare the intent of his action, after which he must make a test:

  1. If 1d20 returns an even result, the gifts manifests itself with the desired effect.
  2. If 1d20 returns odd, the character pays a fortuitous tribute and from his gift emerges a chaotic effect.

This wound is a long-term effect and can only be cured by resting.

The gift manifests itself in a different area than desired.

The gift  manifests itself but its flows are deactivated until the next rest.

The gift repeats itself a number of times much higher than expected.

17-19

The gift manifests itself again on the previous 3 occasions on which it was invoked.

The game master can introduce the chaotic qualities to stimulate surprise effects or to facilitate players particularly prone to interpretation. In any case, this effect should be linked to areas where the characters have a positive relationship with a Guardian.

An adventure for initial characters

We thought of Attack on Serenity for characters taking their first steps in Primo Contatto setting, with a number of complications appropriate for budding players. However, those who appreciate ancient mysteries and role-playing opportunities will find bread for his teeth, as is tradition in Diventi-styled adventures!
